MY CINEMA

This is Marguerite Duras's oeuvre as told in her own voice, a sprawling book of unofficical press releases, notes to actors, letters to funders and brilliant and illuminating interviews about her cinematic and writing practices. The publisher describes this title as a kind of genre where the boundary between word and image becomes more and more blurred as if it is a cinema seeking the end of cinema. The way these myriad texts are gathered did make me think of pages as leaves, as falling autumn leaves that accumulate and gather and gust in an always-shifting conversation. Duras says "cinema is being trapped in the dark with an image. Nothing more. No matter what the image. A car going 100 miles an hour or a face saying 'no'." Intent on finding her way out of the medium, My Cinema interrogates the coexistent compulsion and hatred that still drove her to continue working.
