Two Dozen Eggs reminded me of a story in a James Joyce book, of a man on a cold night in Dublin, taking refuge in a public house with a beer and a plate of peas with vinegar, a simple salve for hunger and loneliness. That plain yet pleasant comfort is at the heart of these perfect short stories bu Hugh Corcoran, accompanied by recipes that have the same equilibium of good hospitality and economy, a kind of eating that really is the best. There's a foreword by the inimitable Rachel Roddy as well, it feels like reading notes from from inside a cafe or if the walls of a tavern could talk.
