It's not uncommon for the work of make-up artists, stylists etc to be obscured behind the totalising vision of designer. This collection of Inge Grognard's work across 15 or so years of involvement with the fashion industry is testament to her responsibility for some of the most memorable images of the Antwerp Six. Grognard really was the avant-garde of make-up artistry, perhaps make-up beyond making-up, and instead having the capability to drill to a deeper kind of interiority that was harmonious with the ambitions of the designers like Margiela, Vandevorst, Dries van Noten whom she was working alongside. Looking through this publication, it was all eyes staring back at me, wide open, smudged out, spider lashes outlining the window to the psyche. There is nothing superfluous about Grognard's approach, it feels completely essential, just like getting dressed is.
